Plantar Fasciitis

The Plantar Fascia is a casing of connective tissue surrounding blood vessels, nerve fibres and muscle on the underside of the foot, between the heel bone and the toes, creating the arch of the foot. Plantar Fasciitis is the painful result of irritation and swelling of the Plantar Fascia. The condition is usually one of overuse or poor biomechanics.

Symptoms
  • Localised, disruptive pain on the underside of the heel and/or the arch of the foot

  • Pain is usually most prominent in the morning or when undertaking/following weight bearing exertion

  • The pain worsens over time

  • Symptoms can persist for over a year if left untreated

Causes
Diagnosis

A qualified clinician can diagnose Plantar Fasciitis with:

  • A physical examination to locate areas of tenderness

  • Questions regarding pain across the day and circumstances

  • The patient's past medical/physical history

  • Imaging such as Ultrasound or MRI to rule out other causes such as heel spurs
